When Joan Van Ark was the producers's David Jacobs's and Michael Filerman's first and only choice for the role of Valene Ewing, beginning with Dallas (1978), before this one, she didn't want to do television. She did commercial work in New York City for Estee Lauder that led her to get the role, which worked.
