Writer and Director Richard Eyre wanted the color palette of this movie to reflect the tragic trajectory of the main protagonist. Over the course of this movie, the visuals shift from the opening scenes of richness and prosperity, gradually desaturating and progressing toward bleaker tones and starker visuals.
