Originally, the three gargoyles were named Chaney, Laughton, and Quinn, after the three actors who have played Quasimodo in other adaptations of the story (Lon Chaney, Charles Laughton, and Anthony Quinn). The original voices of the gargoyles, respectively, were Sam McMurray, Charles Kimbrough, and Cyndi Lauper. After Disney's legal department objected to using the actors' names, the Disney animators renamed two of the gargoyles as Victor and Hugo. Director Kirk Wise came up with the third name, Laverne, after Laverne Andrews of The Andrews Sisters. Over several years, the characters of the gargoyles were changed, to make them reflect three sides of Quasimodo's personality. Eventually, the directors realized that they had to recast two of the voices. Charles Kimbrough was kept on as the voice of Victor, but McMurray and Lauper were reluctantly let go. In their place, the directors cast Jason Alexander as Hugo and Mary Wickes as Laverne. (Nathan Lane was also considered for the voice of Hugo, but was unavailable due to his Broadway commitments.)
