It was not an arbitrary choice that Alan Parker chose the very first shot of the movie to be a poster of Sir Laurence Olivier in the role of Shakespeare's "Othello": the man considered to be one of the greatest actors of all time experienced a terrifying bout of stage fright while in the middle of a performance, and lost all of his self-confidence during the production. It was Parker's subtle way of saying the film was about to strip away all the glamour and starry-eyed illusions of young people's aspirations towards a career in show business. It's also a symbolic beginning to the very first scene of the film, in which acting student Montgomery MacNeil nervously forgets his lines in the middle of his audition to get into the drama department of the school.
