During the scene where Corporal Rokka (Eero Aho) reports for duty he mentions that he is a veteran of the Winter War. This was an armed conflict between Finland and the USSR from November 1939 to March 1940 that began with the Soviet invasion of Finland. The territory lost in that conflict would be cited by the Finnish government as vindication for the Continuation War fought between the same two nations from 1941 to 1944. This is why in a later scene with Vera (Diana Pozharskaya) Rokka says it was the Russians, not the Finns, who started the war.
