Director Robert Zemeckis said that he felt this film suffered slightly because he was far too busy dedicating his time to filming it and Back to the Future Part III (1990) at the very same time. Additionally Michael J. Fox later said he preferred making Part III over Part II simply for the reason it was a lot more relaxing in comparison as this film had a lot more technicality and special effects. The film was one of the biggest hits of the year but fell dramatically short of its predecessors gross and Part III released six months later grossed even less and was not even in the top ten films of its year as its predecessors had been. Zemeckis has said the sequels most likely did less business than the first film because audiences were disappointed that the franchise ended on a cliffhanger note and had to wait six months after Part II to see the conclusion in Part III.
