In October 1789, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were transferred from the Palace of Versailles to the Tuileries Palace of Paris. They were held under house arrest by the National Guard (Garde nationale), which at the time was led by the nobleman Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834).
