Motown Productions bought the rights to the stage show, intending to cast Stephanie Mills as Dorothy. However, Diana Ross lobbied intensely for the role. Everyone, including Motown head and ex-lover Berry Gordy believed that she was too old, but she insisted that the role of Dorothy was ageless (which it is). She also said she would be able to guarantee Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow if she was cast.
