One of over 700 Paramount productions, filmed between 1929-49, which were sold to MCA/Universal in 1958 for television distribution and since have been owned and controlled by MCA. Initially withheld because of legal complications but considered one of the centerpieces in the MCA/Paramount film library, its earliest documented telecasts took place in Lowell, MA on 3/6/60 on WBZ (Channel 4), Asheville, NC on 4/3/60 on WLOS (Channel 13), and Johnstown, PA on 4/30/60 on WJAC (Channel 6). It soon became a local television favorite, enjoying prime weekend telecasts across the country, next in Grand Rapids, MI on 6/11/60 on WOOD (Channel 8), in Pittsburgh, PA 8/12/60 on KDKA (Channel 2), in St. Louis, MO on 9/16/60 on KMOX (Channel 4), in Miami, FL on 9/23/60 on WTVJ (Channel 4), on 10/16/60 in both Cincinnati, OH on WKRC (Channel 12) and in Salt Lake City, UT on KUTV (Channel 2), in Seattle, WA on 10/22/60 on KIRO (Channel 7), on 11/18/60 in both New York City, NY on WCBS (Channel 2) and in San Francisco, CA on KPIX (Channel 5), and in Buffalo, NY on 11/19/60 on WGR (Channel 2). It was released on DVD 5/23/06 as one of five titles in Universal's Cecil B. DeMille Collection and as a single 4/4/09 as part of the Universal Backlot Series. Now fully restored by UCLA, it also enjoys occasional airings on TV on Turner Classic Movies.
