Tears of the Sun is the first known film to depict U.S. Navy SEALs using the Heckler & Koch Mark 23. The MK23 is a large offensive handgun developed in Germany for the USSOCOM (United States Special Operations Command). The MK23 is chambered in .45 ACP and sports a 6-inch threaded barrel, an attachment for a laser aiming module, as well as a highly durable finish and recoil spring. The MK23 was particularly used frequently by Navy SEALs, though most preferred to use smaller weapons like the SIG-Sauer P226 (which the film also accurately features). The film also features real-life accurate Knight's Armament suppressors attached to the barrels.
