The U.S.S. Aylwin (DD-355) was commanded by the senior officer aboard, Ens. Stanley Caplan. There were several reasons put forward as to why he didn't stop to pick up the Captain and Executive Officer. He said that it was because it would have taken 20 minutes to stop from full speed and then get back up to that.
