Some of the story material comes not from the Hobbit novel but from other Middle-Earth lore sources. Gandalf discovering Sauron hiding at Dol Guldur is described in the Appendices of The Return of the King, where it actually occurred 91 years before the events of The Hobbit. Gandalf also finds Thorin's dying father Thráin there, mad from years of imprisonment and torture. Gandalf escapes and subsequently warns the White Council about Sauron's presence, but Saruman claims that without his Ring of Power, Sauron is not a serious enough threat to warrant such a dangerous intervention. During the second meeting of the White Council 91 years later (which occurs in the book after Gandalf leaves the company of Dwarves at Mirkwood, not during their stay at Rivendel), they finally decide to attack Dol Guldur, and Sauron is chased away. As with the Lord of the Rings films, The Hobbit movies considerably condense the timeline from the books, and have shortened and combined many of these events for dramatic purposes.
