Even though he'd won the Silver Bear award as Best Director, Roman Polanski was not permitted to attend the Berlin International Film Festival. He was under house arrest at his home in Gstaad, Switzerland, pending the Swiss authorities decision on whether to extradite him to the U.S. regarding a 32-year-old sex abuse case.
