Leiji Matsumoto drew a storyboard for the first three episodes, showing a scene where the Yamato is being rebuilt from its World War II battleship wreck and a deck plate is removed to reveal the remains of the dead. Matsumoto was ordered by co-creator Yoshinobu Nishizaki to cut it; Nishizaki said the program was being made for a sponsor, and it was the sponsor's order.
