Dick Van Dyke was living in Malibu, California when cast for the series. (For the first two seasons, most of the series was produced and filmed in Denver, Colorado, and various locations surrounding the city. Much of the cast and the production company personnel from Viacom stayed in the (then) Embassy Suites Hotel downtown, located at 19th Street between Curtis and Arapahoe. Among the reasons that the production of Diagnosis: Murder was situated in Denver was because the same production people had already been working there since about 1990 for Perry Mason TV movies.) Throughout the making of the series, he would fly to his house and back every weekend and on other breaks to be with his family. By the time the show relocated to Malibu, California at the beginning of the third season, he didn't have to travel that far to the set.
