From 1969 to 1983, Paramount Pictures and Sega were units of Charlie Bluhdorn's Gulf+Western Industries conglomerate. G+W divested Sega in 1983-84, refocused itself as an entertainment company, changed its name to Paramount Communications in 1989, and merged with Viacom five years later. Paramount bought Sega under their Gulf+Western banner.
