In the opening sequence of the film where footage of different locations throughout the US during the Purge is shown, the footage supposedly from Sioux Falls, SD was actually taken during the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The men shown shooting were Korean American business owners and other volunteers from the community attempting to keep looters at bay, as Korean-owned businesses were specifically targeted due to ethnic tensions at the time. These men are colloquially referred to in popular culture as "Roof Koreans" as many stationed themselves on the roofs of businesses situated in Koreatown for a better vantage point to defend themselves and their property during the riots.
