Art director Richard Holland said in an interview that the biggest problem filming the torture scenes with The Machine in the Pit of Despair were that the suction cups kept falling out of the straps that were on Cary Elwes (Westley) and that they would fall off Elwes' head and body. Holland admitted that masking tape had to be put in the suction cups in order to keep the cups on Cary Elwes without falling off.
