Writers Mitch Watson, Mark Banker, Roger Eschbacher, Jed Elinoff, and Scott Thomas were given some freedom to touch on dark and serious issues on screen. This was something that had not happened in the Scoobyverse since the first wave of direct-to-video films Scooby-Doo: l'isola degli zombie (1998), Scooby-Doo e il fantasma della strega (1999), Scooby-Doo e gli invasori alieni (2000), and Scooby-Doo e il viaggio nel tempo (2001), which had dark and gloomy plot elements. Most Scooby-Doo incarnations do not go down that path, because Warner Bros. likes to keep the original essence focused on children.
