On the commentary, Darren Aronofsky starts out by saying how proud he is of this film. After Pi greco - Il teorema del delirio (1998)'s success, the director was offered the chance to do whatever he wanted. He knew right off that he wanted to adapt Hubert Selby Jr.'s novel. Everyone told the director he was crazy. He refers to getting the film completed as a "war."
