Eric Braeden (John Jacob Astor) was himself a survivor of the worst sinking in history. The Wilhelm Gustloff was a cruise ship built by Nazi Germany in the 1930s. In 1945, the ship was being used to evacuate civilians from the Baltic, ahead of the advancing Red Army. On January 30, 1945, she was torpedoed by a Soviet submarine. More than 9000 people died, nearly 6 times as many as who had perished aboard the Titanic. Braeden was one of the 1252 people who survived.
