The film was originally supposed to be released in August 1994, as 20th Century Fox had concerns it would underperform at the box office. They also felt it would be a worthy action successor to True Lies (1994), which opened that July. However, test audiences reacted much more favorably than expected and Fox wanted something to provide adult action competition in comparison to the family-friendly I Flintstones (1994), which opened two weeks earlier. These factors led to the release date being moved up to June as their first movie of the summer season. In the end, Fox clearly made the right decision, as the film grossed $121 million in the U.S. and Canada and $350 million worldwide against a budget of $30 million.
