Many internet users were belligerent towards the film's perceived "feminist agenda and political correctness", because Brie Larson had previously spoken out against under-representation of women, people of color and people with disabilities among journalists and film critics. This caused a flood of negative ratings on several review sites (including IMDb), weeks ahead of the film's release. As a result, Rotten Tomatoes changed their policy to no longer accept reviews and ratings for a film that hasn't been released yet.
