Until Mark Felt revealed himself in 2005, Bob Woodward, Carl Bernstein and Ben Bradlee only revealed that Deep Throat was a man (not a woman or a composite) and still alive. Other suspects besides Felt included Diane Sawyer, who had been a Nixon press aide before her CBS News and ABC News career and assisted with his post-presidency memoirs, Nixon's second White House chief of staff Gen. Alexander Haig (who Woodward finally said was not Deep Throat), and Nixon campaign aide John Sears.
