The creative team wanted to lock Peter Parker into a single personality and stick with it. In the comics Peter Parker has had as many as five different personalities over the years. He was not a nerd in this show. They made him pretty much the guy he was in the 1980's when it was not uncommon for him to have a lot of women in his life, but could not make things work because he was also Spider-Man.
