Before Anthony Hopkins was cast, Robert Duvall was considered for the role of Lecter. Duvall had previously played another doctor, John Watson in Sherlock Holmes: soluzione settepercento (1976). That part was subsequently played by Alan Cox in Piramide di paura (1985). Cox's father, Brian Cox, originated the role of Lecter in Manhunter - Frammenti di un omicidio (1986).
