In the novels, there is tension between Irulan and Chani, because they are married to the same man (Paul Atreides). Chani was Paul's first lover and mother of their son Leto (who was later killed by the Harkonnen). After the defeat of Emperor Shaddam, Paul arranges a marriage with Irulan, since she is Shaddam's successor and this allows Paul to become Emperor. Both Chani and Irulan intend to give birth to Paul's heir. Irulan eventually drugs Chani with contraceptives, and accidentally causes Chani's death. Having no children of her own and mourning the deaths of both Chani and Paul, Irulan raises Chani's other two children, the twins Leto Atreides II and Ghanima Atreides.
