Sergio Leone's first choice to play Ramón Rojo was his friend Mimmo Palmara. Palmara passed on the role to appear in Mario Caiano's Le pistole non discutono (1964). Gian Maria Volontè was then cast as Ramón. Leone never cast Palmara in another movie.
