Glen Ford's character's rank is lieutenant junior grade (O-2). In real life, before World War II Ford served in the Coast Guard Reserve. When the war started, Glenn Ford enlisted in the US Marine Corps, where he turned down an officer's commission based on his Coast Guard service to avoid the appearance of special treatment. He attained the rank of sergeant before being selected for officer training. After the war ended Ford switched services and received a commission in the United States Navy, eventually attaining the rank of captain (O-6).
