In the Extended Edition, during the tense scene after Thorin threatens to kill Bilbo and Bilbo is able to escape, Bard attempts to reason with him for terms for the safe return of the Arkenstone. Thranduil comments that Bard should sell the Arkenstone to Ecthelion of Gondor. Ecthelion is the Steward of Gondor, and is the father of Denethor, played by John Noble in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
