After Batman (Robert Pattinson) brings his evidence back from his walk through the Mayor's murder scene, Alfred (Andy Sirkis) takes a copy of the cipher upstairs into the Wayne residence and starts to work on it. When Bruce comes into the room where he and Alfred are expecting the accountants from Wayne Enterprises, he sees Alfred working on the cipher and asks what he's doing. Alfred replies that he is reliving his life in "the circus". This is not meant to be a pun on the actor's name, nor was Alfred a circus performer, which would offer no great help in cracking a code. Alfred is not referring to his days with a traveling circus, but to MI6, the British Secret Intelligence Service, where he would have had a good deal of experience breaking codes during the Cold War. The informal nickname for MI6, established in John LeCarre's novels about it, is "The Circus". Alfred was in the SAS and then worked for British Intelligence according to many sources in the comics and film.
