When Gandalf meets Bilbo in Bags End, Bilbo takes off Gandalf's hat and staff saying him: "Tea, or maybe something a little stronger? I've got a few bottles of the old Wineyard left! 1296, very good year, almost as old as I am! It was laid down by my father. What say we open one?" According with his creator J.R.R. Tolkien, Middle Earth's inhabitants use diverse calendars. The main used counts three different ages: First Age spans for 590 years, since the creation of the world (Arda) until that the first dark lord Morgoth is expelled from Arda, being exiled in the outer void. The Second Age spans for 3441 years, since the creation of Grey Havens until the Sauron's defeat during the Last Alliance of Men and Elves. The Third Age spans for 3021 years, since the Isildur's death and The One Ring's missing in the Anduin river until the departing of Elrond, Galadriel, Celeborn, Bilbo and Frodo in Grey Havens, two years later after Sauron's death. Year 1 in hobbit calendar is marked after The Shire's colonization happened in 1600 of the Third Age. Therefore, 1296 in the hobbit calendar translates to 2896 of the Third Age. According to this timeline, Bilbo's farewell feast happens in 1401 in the hobbit calendar (3001 of the Third Age).
