Orson Welles's cinematographer for the film was Gregg Toland, described by Welles as "just then, the number-one cameraman in the world". To Welles's astonishment, Toland visited him at his office and said, "I want you to use me on your picture". RKO hired Toland on loan from Samuel Goldwyn Productions in the first week of June 1940.
