Rian Johnson was offered the chance to direct the next film in the saga, Star Wars - L'ascesa di Skywalker (2019) based on executive reactions to early versions of this film. Johnson turned down the offer due to the film's tight production schedule. Lucasfilm then offered him a three picture deal to create his own trilogy set in the "Star Wars" universe. Given the highly divisive response to the film and multiple projects he's working on at the moment, it is unknown whether this supposed trilogy will come to fruition.
