When production of the 4th season began, Clarence Gilyard Jr. did not appear in a few episodes, from the very beginning is because of both reasons. When production had been shackled by the Writers Guild of America, to go on strike, in 1988, they had to expand 2 episodes, that following season to complete the Season 3 package and when production of the 4th season was about to begin, and with Kene Holiday leaving before, Andy Griffith and the producers were asked to use him, for his last 2 episodes that he appeared in, which, fortunately, they did.
