Matthew Vaughn was originally hired to direct X-Men: Conflitto finale (2006), but left citing pressure from the studio to finish the film within too short a time. He was approached again for this movie, and accepted, being an X-Men fan with a desire to direct an X-men movie, even though it meant he had even less time to finish the movie than with X-Men: The Last Stand (2006).
