Simon MacCorkindale left the series because he was battling cancer. In his last episode Casualty: Thicker Than Water (2008), his character Harry Harper was forced to resign by Marilyn Fox for exposing the truth behind Ruth Winters' suicide attempt, which reflected how the NHS and the public failed her.
