The show was based on the Japanese anime series Sei jûshi Bisumaruku (1984) (Star Musketeer Bismarck), which achieved moderate success in Japan. After World Events Productions secured the worldwide distribution rights for "Bismarck", the episodes were directly taken from that show, but heavily altered to appeal the Western market. With a combination of complex editing, newly written stories and revised character backgrounds, "Bismarck" was changed to a show much in the vein of BraveStarr (1987). Additionally, six new episodes were produced by World Events Productions, as a way to extend and explain their vision of the world of Saber Rider.
