The opening scene is a point of view shot of a commercial jet flying through the air toward Thailand. In addition to providing an establishing location shot of the family who are passengers in the jet and the central characters in the film, it is likely also a reference to the fact that tsunamis travel through deep ocean water at the average speed of a commercial jet flying at cruising speed, which is approximately 600 miles per hour (966 km/h). As a tsunami reaches a coastline encounters shallower water, it simultaneously slows and grows enormously in size. As it crests on the shoreline it is travelling at about 30 mph (63 km/h).
