In this movie, Kung Lao and Liu Kang are portrayed as cousins. The actors Max Huang (Kung Lao) and Ludi Lin (Liu Kang) indeed do have an informal "familial" relationship in real life; both worked as members of Jackie Chan's Stunt Team, which in Chinese is actually known as "Chan's Family Group".
