Lucius Caelius, the elder Roman who lived in the abandoned temple at the base of Vesuvius, told the story of how Lucius Cornelius Sulla seized his lands, wealth, status, and killed his family. In 83-81 BC Sulla waged a second civil war on Rome, this time successfully ousting Lucius Cinna from power. Afterwards he ordered the proscription of all lands, titles, and wealth of anyone who supported Cinna. Many were executed or exiled. The man who was responsible for this proscription and became obscenely wealthy from it, was none other than Marcus Crassus, Sulla's right hand man. This means that Lucius once publicly supported Cinna, and that his hatred would also be directed at Crassus.
