The cyborg warriors' weapons were supposed to fire beams that distorted the view of the background behind them, an effect vaguely similar to the water tentacle effect in "The Abyss". There were two shots/scenes produced with the effect in place, which looked fantastic. However, the beam's special effect was deemed too expensive, because there are too many shots in the movie where the cyborgs fire at something, so the idea was abandoned altogether. In the movie, a sound is heard when the weapon charges up, and then the aftermath of the shot is shown, but never the actual beam, as it didn't fit the budget.
