The first cut was overwhelmingly positive by the crew and Warner Bros. executives. They were very excited to release it and hoped it would be their biggest movie for the studio as was the case with Joe Dante and Steven Spielberg's previous collaboration Gremlins (1984). Although the film was released on Independence Day weekend, the advertising for it was minimal and it flopped at the box office.
