Mark Wahlberg claimed that the plan in pre-production was to film the falling scenes as visual effects shots with the cast hanging on wires in the studio in front of green screens. Due to budget limitations, the scenes had to be filmed on location in practical stunts too dangerous for the actors to perform. Some of their stunt doubles received serious injuries.
