Chris Penn was initially hesitant to take the role of Floyd because he did not feel acting as a character in a childrens film at that point in his career was a good choice as he was a supporting character in adult dramas such as Reservoir Dogs (1992), True Romance (1993) and Short Cuts (1993). He also was unsure about working with Debi Mazar due to her close friendship with Madonna who was his brother Sean's ex wife. He asked his brother Sean if he should do the film or not. Sean reminded Chris that although he had appeared in films that were critically acclaimed such as the aforementioned none of them were successful at the box office and he was in the need of appearing in a film that was commercially successful and due to the success of the first Beethoven (1992) he felt the film would be the commercial hit that Chris needed for his career at that point. Mazar also assured Chris that her friendship with his ex sister in law would not have a negative affect on their working together so Penn ultimately accepted and while this film was not as commercially successful as its predecessor it was still a hit at the box office and was one of the bigger box office successes Penn had made for some time.
