The anime would later go on to be heavily criticized by some people (most notably YouTubers such as Mother's Basement and AniSins) claiming that it was due to Kirito being a 'mary sue' type character, multiple time-skips between episodes, intense moments which were considered to be too over the top, have Kirito have a romantic relationship with her sister Suguha (which is considered incest; a big problem in western countries), use of sexual themes (such as partial nudity and rape), the creator's lack of research on how MMORPGs work and choosing Bryce Papenbrook to voice Kirito in the English dub since people claimed his voice acting was too noticeable and cringe-worthy.
