Although Bagpipes are of uncertain origin, there are depictions of ancient bagpipe-like instruments from Egypt, the Middle East and Rome and documented evidence of it's use in medieval Europe (England, Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, France, Spain, Portugal and Italy). They have been adopted by military forces in the Middle East for over a century - the Jordanian army having a particularly spectacular marching pipe band. And so, with the Arabic and Islamic influences of Dune, it is wholly appropriate that bagpipes should be used by the Atreides military for ceremonial purposes.
