Although Tony Walton had been much lauded for his period costumes for Assassinio sull'Orient Express (1974), his being costume designer on ''Death on the Nile'' was made impossible by his involvement with I'm magic (1978). Walton for ''The Wiz'' and Anthony Powell for ''Death on the Nile'' would face-off for the Best Costume Design Oscar: Walton was favored to win for the elaborate costuming of ''The Wiz'' (despite that film's box-office under-performance), and Powell taking the Oscar was a major upset.
