This is Baz Luhrmann's first biographical film. Originally, at some point in the 2000s, Luhrmann was going to make a biographical film about Ancient Greek King Alexander the Great. The film would've starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Nicole Kidman. However, Oliver Stone beat him to the punch by directing Alexander (2004). Luhrmann ended up abandoning the project and decided to write and direct Australia (2008).
