In the novel, the woman in the bathtub (in room 217) had killed herself because she was abandoned by her young lover. In the movie it's never explained who the woman in the tub is, but in the scene when Grady spills the advocaat on Jack in the Gold Room an older woman sitting at the table closest to the red bathroom looks very similar to the "old hag" in room 237. She's sitting with a young man and she gives Jack an icy stare as he walks by.
